What is Multi Factor Authentication?
For those of you who have used online banking within the last 5 years, you have probably used Multi Factor Authentication or MFA. This is the process in which you need to provide proof that you are who you say you are in order to access important information. Usually that proof comes in the form of a 5-6 digit code received via text message, email or authenticator app. You must enter that code in order to log into your account.
Why do I need it?
MFA is an extremely important tool for protecting those online banking accounts, but it can also be used to dramatically improve the security of your email. Your email can often act as a gateway to other accounts. Once bad actors gain access to your email, they can often use it to reset passwords and gain access to other accounts linked to that email. To combat that, most modern email providers offer an MFA option for your email. That way if a hacker gets their hands on your password, they still can’t get into your account.
But isn’t this extra step a hassle?
Yes it will take a few more seconds to log in but the hassle of that pales in comparison to the hassle of being hacked.
Which verification method should I use?
The most secure option to use for your MFA is an authenticator app. We recommend using Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy. We also suggest adding MFA to other online accounts especially those with stored sensitive personal information and payment information.
